It is possible to drink legally and safely – when you’re over 21. But if you’re under 21 alcohol can be especially risky.

Many kids and teenagers begin drinking alcohol as early as elementary school.  Possibly even more than you could imagine. Whatever the reasons may be for starting to drink alcohol, abuse amongst our teenagers is dangerous. Kids and teens who drink alcoholic beverages are more likely to

  • be victims of violent crime and sexual assault;
  • have serious problems in school; and
  • be involved in drinking-related traffic crashes.

They are also more likely to develop problems with alcohol and their health later in life.

There are many reasons that teenagers start to drink, but one of the most common reasons is that they want to look “cool” or fit in with their peers. Parents should get informed on the danger of teenage drinking and what they can do to help their kids avoid alcohol problems. Get help for your child if you suspect a drinking problem.
