Most of us are affected in some way with a friend or family member that has an alcohol dependence. We need to remember not to judge alcoholism, but to accept it for what it is - a bio-psychosocial disease with a strong genetic influence, obvious signs and symptoms, a natural progression and a fatal outcome if there is no treatment intervention.
Even though we would really like to, the fact remains that we cannot force someone to stop drinking alcohol. The choice for alcohol withdrawal is theirs alone. But by providing support and encouragement we can help.
Suggestions for Managing Alcoholism amongst Loved Ones
- Do not get frustrated or angry. An alcoholic is more likely to work with someone who is non-judgmental. Allow them some space to talk to you about what is bothering them.
- Take one step at a time. Rushing things can put stress on the situation. Stress can be a trigger to drink.
- Find activities to do that do not include alcohol where they will be less likely to have to resist cravings.
- Talk to them in general terms about the affects drinking has on surrounding loved ones without placing blame on them.
- Do not cover up for them.
- Avoid arguments, but make it clear what behavior is unacceptable.
- Take care of yourself. Enlist in other friends and family to help as well so that the support is shared.
It is important to learn how to manage your life in how it interacts with an alcoholic loved one and what your role as a support person may be. Recovery doesn’t happen overnight, it is an on-going process. Keep in mind that sobriety does not happen with your help alone, but you do play an important role. It is always recommended that the alcoholic seek outside treatment to learn the coping skills necessary to successfully treat their addiction.
