This can be a difficult question to answer as there are many different areas to consider and is widely based on the circumstances of each individual situation. A healthy guideline would be that drinking is harmful if it causes a problem in any area of your life.
Example: If a person goes to the bar for a couple of glasses of beer after work and by doing so becomes late for an appointment such as people coming over for dinner, son waiting and needing a ride to go to soccer pratice. Wife or husband waiting for their spouse to watch the kids as they have an appointment or obligation to keep.
The Department of Health recommends that women drink no more than 14 units of alcohol a week, and no more than three units in any one day. (175ml glass of wine at 13 per cent is 2.3 units; a measure of spirits is one unit).
